The Occupational Safety and Health Center, in coordination with Department of Labor and Employment MIMAROPA Region, conducted “Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training Course for Safety Officer 1 (SO1)” in two (2) batches last July 23 and 24, 2019 at Best Western Plus The Ivywall Hotel, Rizal Avenue, Bancao-Bancao, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. There were 100 participants from government and private sectors who have undergone the said training.
The Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training Course for Safety Officer 1 (SO1) is a mandatory training course in pursuance with Republic Act No. 11058 and DOLE Department Order 198 s. 2018. It is an eight-hour OSH orientation with additional two-hour Training for Trainers designed to impart knowledge and skills on basic concepts and principles of occupational safety and health to enable safety officer 1 to implement their respective organization’s safety and health program.
As per Section 14 of Department Order 198, the roles of safety officer is to oversee the overall management of the OSH program in coordination with the OSH committee in their establishment; frequently monitor and inspect any health or safety aspect of the operation being undertaken with the participation of supervisors and workers; assist government inspectors in the conduct of safety and health inspection at any time whenever work is being performed or during the conduct of an accident investigation by providing necessary information and OSH reports as required by the OSH standards; and, Issue Work Stoppage Order (WSO) when necessary based on the requirements and procedures provided by the OSH standards.
